Phase I & Phase II
This two-phase treatment is an orthodontic process carried out in two stages: structuring dentition early on to allow proper alignment, as well as prevent further issues developing. The first phase, Phase I, is interceptive orthodontic treatment. Just like it sounds, this process can intercept many orthodontic problems in the early stages. We encourage early treatment for any cases that would otherwise delay serious orthodontic problems. Some of the more common reasons an orthodontist would recommend Phase I treatment:
- dental crossbites
- skeletal crossbites
- underbites
- excessively overlapping or deep bites
- open bites (front teeth do not meet)
- jaw growth or jaws that are not in proportion to each other
- severely protruding teeth
- problematic oral habits (i.e. extended thumb-sucking)
- clefts
- severe crowding or spacing
The second phase, Phase II, will only be employed once all permanent teeth have erupted. The focus of this stage is to achieve the perfect alignment and bite of the teeth. This phase will generally have a shorter treatment time due to the preventative actions taken in Phase I.
Invisalign® First clear aligners are specifically designed for Phase I treatments. Its primary focus is to develop arch forms, and maintain space for erupting detention. It can help in preventing common conditions, such as spacing/crowding, A-P correction, aesthetic alignment, and tooth protrusions or interferences.
These aligners are especially crafted to accommodate mixed dentition (baby and permanent teeth). It utilizes SmartForce® attachments and SmartStage® technology to allow more predictable tooth movements as well as supporting arch development.
Younger patients using these aligners, as opposed to braces, struggle less when brushing and flossing while also eliminating gum and cheek irritations from wires and brackets.
Following Phase I, there will be a retention period where we monitor the eruption of the permanent teeth. Then we will proceed with Phase II, which is a standard course of Invisalign® Teen or braces.
Invisalign® First aligners are a proven way to address the problems we aim to correct with early interceptive orthodontics
